Junipero Serra founded Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa on September 1, 1772, the fifth mission in California. After flaming arrows set its thatched roofs on fire, the padres began making the red clay roof tiles that became standard at the later missions. The church faces Mission Plaza, where San Luis Creek runs through the middle of downtown.
